Facial Hair Growth- Hirsutism by Dr. Gaurav Palikhe

In this video, SimpliHealth expert Dr. Gaurav Palikhe, Consultant Endocrinologist from Apollo Clinic, Chandigarh is talking about facial hair growth-Hirsutism. Are you worried about excessive facial hair growth?

What is Hirsutism?

This condition is more commonly called Hirsutism in English. The patient has excessive facial hair growth or hair growth in any part of the body, like the chest, back, arms, and thighs. So there is excessive hair growth in all these areas, and the hair might be dark and hard. So this condition is called Hirsutism.

Problems related to Hirsutism

There can be other problems related to Hirsutism, like excessive pimples and problems with periods since Hirsutism mainly occurs in females. This condition usually arises with the production of excessive male hormones, testosterone. So, in addition to period problems, another main problem that commences with this is infertility. So infertility is also a significant problem that associates with this.

Causes Of Hirsutism

PCOS

The most crucial cause of Hirsutism is PCOS, commonly seen in females.

Kidney diseases

Apart from this, other reasons include adrenal gland-related problems. The adrenal gland lies above both the kidneys. So any disorder in the adrenal gland may lead to Hirsutism.

Medication and ovaries

Particular medicine and ovaries-related problems also might lead to Hirsutism.

Diagnosis of Hirsutism

We can diagnose Hirsutism with specific tests and determine the exact cause, whether it is occurring because of medicines. If the intake of drugs is causing this, we can inquire about the medicines from the patient.

Otherwise, we can diagnose a hormonal problem by running a hormonal test.

Treatment of Hirsutism

If the test confirms the hormonal situation, we can target hormone therapy in which we prescribe certain medicines to lower hormones.

As PCOS is the most common cause of Hirsutism. The patient should increase physical activity and promote weight loss measures, and it is an important part of treatment. In addition, we do cosmetic treatment for this problem.

Those who are reluctant to take medicine or have a mild form of Hirsutism can follow methods like plucking, threading, waxing, and laser techniques. So this is how we can treat Hirsutism. Thank you.

Stay healthy. And if you have any problems regarding Hirsutism, Please consult your doctor.
