Galactorrhea (White Discharge from Breast ),In this video, Dr. Rachna Abrol, Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist talks about the causes of  galactorrhea or white discharge from the breast without pregnancy.

One of the main reasons for milky discharge from the breast without pregnancy is abnormal periods. Under these circumstances, doctors advise blood tests which include prolactin. An increase in the concentration of the hormone prolactin can lead to secretion of milky discharge from the breast without pregnancy. And in some cases, menstrual problems like delayed or sudden periods and headaches can also be responsible for high levels of prolactin in the body. If the prolactin levels are high then the doctor advises an MRI test to determine if there is malfunction of the pituitary gland which secretes prolactin. High concentration of prolactin can be managed with the medicines.

Another reason for high levels of prolactin concentration is that  when women take drugs like antidepressants and anti-anxiety. This drug also causes an increase in the levels of prolactin. As a result there is an increase in the milky secretion from the breast. One can treat this condition by changing the medicine. 

Treatment of white discharge from breast

If a woman has clear or bloody discharge from the breast and feels a lump inside the breast, it could be a sign of a breast tumor or cancer. Other symptoms include pain in the breast, abnormal breast size, nipple inversion and rashes over nipples. Under these circumstances, a woman should immediately seek the help of a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment. These are some of the reasons that can cause breast discharge.
