In this video, Dr. Shefali Bhardwaj, Psychologist at Faith Hospital Chandigarh has shared information about a common psychiatric disorder known as major depressive disorder.
Major depressive disorder symptoms, Sadness is an emotion everyone faces at a certain point in life. It could be a reaction to the stressor in the environment, loss of the loved one that could turn into grief. But if the sadness prevails for longer, say beyond two weeks, it could be called a major depressive disorder. Doctors diagnose major depressive disorder clinically. So in this type of depressive disorder, the symptoms stay for more than two weeks to 14 days. Some common symptoms include loss of concentration or attention and loss of interest in daily activities.
In addition, pervasive sad moods disturb biological functions like sleep difficulty, disrupting sleep during the night, not feeling hungry, and always being in an angry mood. A few may have symptoms, including cancelling social plans, feeling isolated by not talking to anyone, crying for no reason, feeling sad all the time, and most feeling to end their lives. These are thoughts that need medical attention.
Reasons for major depressive disorder:
The most common reason includes biological and psycho-social. Biological causes involve an imbalance in chemicals or hormones, poor nutrition, and much more. The psycho-social reasons include stress, anger, and inability to perceive things. Other symptoms include taking things personally, being hesitant to talk, being introverted, and having cognitive situations. During cognitive conditions, one assumes only unnecessary things like this or that, so there are multiple social obligations. Certain types of depressive disorders include persistent mood disorder or dysthymia, recurrent depressive disorder, post-perimenopause or pre-perimenopause mood dysphoric disorder, and certain psychiatric disorders. One can treat and reason in multiple ways.
Treatment for major depressive disorder:
The treatment includes pharmacological, which provides medicine and counselling, and therapy. Therapy includes interpersonal, behavioural, cognitive, and group therapy. For example, different types of depression could cause mass depression, double depression, persistent mood disorder, and neurotic depression. In addition, a person may develop psychotic depression, other forms of depression, and much more.
